Géraud Portal, a musician with an atypical background, never ceases to surprise. As a child, he taught himself to play the electric bass for the first time. Later, dividing his time between lumberjack during the week and jazz musician at the weekend, he gradually carved out a place for himself on the French music scene. In 2012, he flew to New York, where he spent a number of years honing his bop and getting a taste for the world. His first album, Fort Greene Story, was born of these experiences. Still in New York, he recorded his second opus, Brothers (2015), with Étienne Déconfin and Kush Abadey. In 2015, the double bassist moved to Paris. He then began to regularly survey the capital's major clubs, notably the Duc des Lombards, where he was given 'carte blanche' to lead Friday night jam sessions. This freedom allowed him to discover a wide range of musicians, some of whom went on to play on his current project, a tribute album to double bassist Charles Mingus.
With this new quartet, Géraud Portal wishes to express an original music, without harmonic instruments, for a greater melodic and rhythmic communication between the musicians. For this reason, he has specially written new compositions dedicated to this formation and the musicians who make it up. His aim is to highlight the talents of FeatherThe result is a very lyrical approach to improvisation, Jean-Paul Estiévenartfabulously unpredictable and Antoine Pierre whose groove is phenomenal.
