Christoph Irniger Trio feat. Ben Van Gelder (CH/NL/ISR)
Christoph Irniger (CH) - tenor saxophone, clarinet / Ben Van Gelder (NL) - alto saxophone / Raffaele Bossard (CH) - bass / Ziv Ravitz (ISR) - drums
Christoph Irniger's trio celebrates melody without ever lapsing into the trivial. These musicians offer us poetic pieces that demonstrate that accessible melodies and complex tonal universes need not be mutually exclusive, and can be perfectly compatible. Christoph Irniger is a master of orchestration, rejecting any form of hierarchy between soloist and rhythm. Instead of using compositions as springboards for solos, he manages to find interesting ways for improvisations to underline compositional characteristics. "Melody, arrangement, improvisation: the trio fuses them all into a seductive, intertwined whole," says American jazz critic Kevin Whitehead.
The group currently plays in a quartet with Ben van Gelder - a true authority on the alto saxophone, having played with the likes of David Binney, Mark Turner and Ambrose Akinmusire. Together, the group presents the album 'Open City', released in September 2020 on Intakt Records. The Christoph Irniger Trio was formed in 2012, with Raffaele Bossard on double bass and Ziv Ravitz on percussion. With 'Gowanus Canal' (2012) and 'Octopus' (2015), they have produced two exemplary albums. The trio creates music that combines intelligence and passion, timeless yet contemporary.
Luca Sisera "ROOFER" (CH)
Luca Sisera - bass, compositions / Michael Jaeger - tenor saxophone / Maurus Twerenbold - trombone / Yves Theiler - piano / Michi Stulz - drums
With nonchalant ease, this quintet oscillates between avant-gardism and an awareness of tradition. Their previous albums 'Prospect' (2015, Leo Records) and 'Moscow Files' (2017, Leo Records) were both widely praised by the international press. After numerous tours, festivals and concerts, ROOFER has established itself, beyond borders, as a bold, playful jazz collective eager to experiment. With the release of their third album 'Starlex Complex' in 2019, the group has begun a new chapter. The multitude of concerts has once again enriched the group's language, while the collective's sound universe has expanded wonderfully. Intricate rhythms, fast unison parts, latent swing fantasies and anthemic soundscapes form a solid foundation on which the musicians can improvise. The result is complex, innovative music that is as free as it is form-conscious, while remaining stimulating for musicians and audiences alike. So it's hardly surprising that the extreme climbers who call themselves 'roofers', and who scale the world's tallest buildings with no safety systems in place, but only sophisticated techniques, proven expertise and an unquenchable thirst for adventure, should serve as metaphorical role models for this band.
