A variety of styles and tones, subtle rhythms, a music where joy and melancholy rub shoulders at every moment. Played with ease, this music invites you to travel into a poetic universe, and opens the door to wide open spaces. The drumming is airy, and the central double bass breathes like the old tree under which Orlando throws himself. The sound and the silences are skilfully shared with the melodies of the bass clarinet and the ever-changing chords of the virtuoso piano: musical adventure is at the heart of this quartet.
The line-up includes drummer Antoine Pierre (Joshua Redman, Philip Catherine, Tom Barman/Taxi Wars) and Parisians Florent Nisse (David Enhco, Yaron Herman, Michel Portal) on double bass and Maxime Sanchez on piano (Magic Malik, Chris Cheek, Flash Pig).
Orlando is the first album from the Franco-Belgian project by Brussels-based saxophonist Toine Thys. It bears the enigmatic first name of the hero of Virginia Woolf's novel of the same name. Like Orlando, who swears to remain immortal and will travel through many eras, these four musicians are experimenting together with the many aspects of their reality and their evolution through time.
Orlando was released in November 2020 by Hynote Records. Toine Thys's sober, carefully produced edition showcases the photographer's work. Gil Mirande in a detachable booklet of 10 black-and-white photographs. These photos can be freely combined with the 10 tracks on the album, composed by the saxophonist, Antoine Pierre and Florent Nisse.
