The Senghor welcomes the Viper's Rhythm Band, a jazz group playing swing as it was played in the 1920s and 1930s, accompanied on stage by a couple of dancers to explore a pivotal period in history, and a style of jazz with a popular aesthetic more likely to appeal to a non-specialist audience.
Aaaah, the Roaring Twenties! Warm, toasty evenings, big fiestas worthy of Gatsby the Magnificent, the legendary Cotton Club, jazz stars such as Armstrong, Ellington and Count Basie. How would you like to step back in time for a rollicking concert of swing, lindy hop and charleston? You'd think you were there!
Three one-hour workshops, each focusing on a different facet of jazz, will be held throughout the day, giving children and adults alike the chance to learn more about this musical genre.
WORKSHOP 1 "Jazz, improvised music...".
Jazz and swing singing for children (6-8 years)
During this workshop, children will learn jazz singing, scat, or how to make music without words, how to improvise? Between listening and practising, children can learn a jade piece and, if they feel like it, why not improvise a solo like the grown-ups!
WORKSHOP 2 "Jazz, rhythmic music..." ?
Rhythm with bodys percussion or rhythm with a hand percussionist (8-10 years)
During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to discover this unique approach where rhythm will no longer hold any secrets for you! They will learn to feel the rhythm and off-beats in the body with body percussion.
WORKSHOP 3 "Jazz, music of mixed cultures".
The history of jazz for older children (10-12 years)
But where does jazz come from? Let's learn about its history, try our hand at improvisation and play...
Born of the meeting of African cultures and Western traditions, a blend steeped in the pain of slavery gave birth to the blues. A music of fusion and freedom! Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis...
